Welcome to Dotson Commercial.

Hi. I’m Grant Dotson, and this is Dotson Commercial. I’m not new to Chattanooga, and not new to photography, but this is a new brand and I want to begin introducing it with a brief history.

I’ve worked as a photographer in the area for 8 years after beginning my career as a graphic designer. I still love all things design & type related—I even taught Typography I at UTC for several semesters. But creating imagery with a camera is a passion that has taken me to many more places than I ever expected. Over the years I’ve photographed projects for local, national, and international companies, shot the foundational images for new brands as well as brands being revitalized, photographed city and business leaders, and been commissioned to shoot on both coasts, along with the northeast and southern states.

I did all of that under my first brand, Dotson Studios, but it’s long since time that my commercial portfolio had its own home, and I’m proud to begin that today. I’m still the same photographer, and this isn’t the start of a change with my existing client relationships. But my commercial work is very much informed by my own design history and a love of simple, clean, graphic compositions. So it’s only fitting that this body of work has a new identity reflecting those same values.

So I’d like to take this opportunity to thank my friends at Widgets & Stone for creating that identity. I’ve been a fan of their work since 2002, when I took a letterpress internship with Paul during my senior year of design school. And I’ve been glad to have Widgets as a photography client for years now, helping them give their own clients strong imagery. It was a fun change of pace to see their process from the other end, and I couldn’t be more pleased with the results.

So that’s Dotson Commercial. Read more about some of my projects in the Case Studies portfolio and find out more about how I approach different kinds of projects under Services. I love the excitement of shooting a new kind of subject matter, so if you have a project in mind, let’s talk!
